EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.
