A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
