A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
